Chietigj Bajpaee is an expert in the field of India’s foreign policy, Indo-Pacific geopolitics, and India-China relations. He is Senior Research Fellow for South Asia in the Asia-Pacific Programme at Chatham House.

The subject of his doctoral studies was: The Sino-Indian relationship in a regional context: The ‘China factor’ in India’s ‘Look East’ Policy. Prior to joining Chatham House, he was the political risk adviser at the Norwegian energy company, Equinor (formerly Statoil), and worked with several political risk consultancies, Control Risks and IHS Markit (now S&P Global). Earlier in his career, Chietigj was a researcher for the the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) in London and the Centre for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, DC. He was Visiting Fellow at the Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses and at the Vivekananda International Foundation in New Delhi, India.

He has authored op-eds for various newspapers, including the Guardian and Telegraph, been interviewed by numerous news outlets, including the BBC, CNN, and Bloomberg, as well as writing for several peer-reviewed journals and contributing chapters in edited volumes. His book, China in India’s Post-Cold War Engagement with Southeast Asia (2022) is a key resource for understanding how New Delhi balances its relationship with Beijing whilst engaging with ASEAN nations.
